What Reiki’s all about…. pretty much.

Reiki – May the Force Be with You

This article was published in issue 19 (May 2007) of the UK’s ‘Paranormal’ magazine.

One of the fundamental principles underlying many alternative therapies is the idea of a biological life force energy. In traditional Chinese medicine it is called ‘chi’, in Ayurvedic medicine it is known as ‘prana’, and Russian researchers gave it the rather grandiose title ‘bio-plasmic energy’. Others simply refer to it as Light or Love. This life force energy which is said to animate all living things, flows around our bodies through meridians (or pathways) and the chakras (energy centres). When this energy becomes blocked, illness follows.
Reiki – which is a Japanese word meaning ‘universal life force energy’ – is a system of channelling this energy through the hands to the patient; accelerating the body’s ability to heal physical and emotional disorders.

Since Reiki’s spread to the West in the 1970’s, it has become one of the most widely acclaimed therapeutic systems available.  It can be used for chronic ailments, pain, stress, anxiety, combating addictions, improving the quality of life for the terminally ill and simply for an increased sense of wellbeing.  In some areas of the country through Social Services funding it is being used very successfully as a part of drug rehabilitation programmes and for curing people of alcohol addiction.  In others it is being used with remarkable results for the alleviating and curing of symptoms associated with M.E. and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It’s most immediate and powerful results however seem to be in the area of relief from stress related problems. In fact there are no problems that cannot benefit from Reiki and it can be used in tandem with and to enhance any other treatment whether they be conventional or complementary medicines or therapies.

In the USA and Canada, where Reiki first took root in the West it is being used extensively in some hospital and hospice environments by trained medical staff as well as by alternative practitioners. Reiki is being used in a variety of situations such as that of the lady who was recuperating from a hysterectomy. After being discharged from the
hospital she developed a bladder infection which lead her to suffer intense pain. The debilitating effects of the pain prevented her from urinating and she had to use a catheter. Her sister suggested Reiki. After a few minutes of Reiki from her sister the lady began to breathe deeply and drifted off to sleep. The Reiki treatment continued for another forty minutes. The next day the lady’s husband phoned his sister-in-law in disbelief. Not only was his wife comfortable when she woke up but she was able to urinate properly for the first time in two weeks. She remained pain free and the hospital confirmed that the bladder infection was gone. She healed quickly from that point on.

Pregnant women also find that Reiki helps them to cope with their pregnancy better and often reduces the feelings of discomfort, leading to a much greater chance of a successful and pain free birth. This is on top of the benefits received by the unborn child through the input of universal life force energy.

Whatever the reasons for having a treatment the recipients of Reiki treatments almost invariably report an increased sense of wellbeing, a feeling of being enclosed in a fine sheath of energy, or the sense that they are being surrounded by unconditional love. Often Reiki will send the recipient into a meditative state where strong emotions can be released. This will only happen if the problem being treated has an emotional basis and it is necessary for those emotions to surface and be dealt with as part of the healing process.

The unique thing about a Reiki treatment is that the energy has an intelligence of its own and will always go to wherever it is needed the most. This means that whatever the problem, be it a migraine or the after effects of chemotherapy, the Reiki energy knows what the precise healing needs of the individual are.

This of course means that Reiki will not always bring about the expected or the desired result straight away. Often underlying causes have to be dealt with before the symptom disappears. So if you develop a stress related illness as a result of your boss giving you a hard time at work, Reiki isn’t going to simply get rid of the physical problem. What needs to happen in this case is that you need to develop a better way of either relating to your boss or a way of removing yourself from that stressful situation – either physically or emotionally.

This is where Reiki will help. By working on your mental state and the way you are effected by other people, the energy will restore in you a state of balance that would enable you to have a peaceful coexistence with your boss. The stress therefore disappears and Reiki can then work on removing – for good – the illness that you manifested.

The practicalities of receiving a treatment are simple. The Reiki recipient lies fully clothed on a treatment table and simply relaxes whilst the practitioner places his or her hands in a series of defined positions on various parts of the body that correspond to the major organs, endocrine glands and the seven major chakras stretching from the Crown at the top of the head to the Root at the lower abdomen. Each position will be held for about five minutes whilst Reiki energy is channelled directly into the body.

So how does the practitioner know how much energy is needed in any particular place, and what if too much is given?
The answer is that the practitioner doesn’t know how much energy is needed, nor is there a need to know.
The subconscious mind/higher self of the recipient draws the energy in just the quantities that are required.
The practitioner actually does nothing other than make his/her hands available through which the energy can be drawn. For this reason it is never possible to have too much Reiki.

At the end of this series of hand positions the practitioner may feel that it is necessary to work on other parts of the body, depending on where an illness or problem seems to have its source or they may wish to return to one of the previously worked on points.

At each hand position the recipient can feel a number of physical sensations. Most commonly heat of varying intensities is felt or in some cases it can be coldness. It is not uncommon for people to feel energy waves rushing through their body or a ‘tingling’ feeling or see in their minds eye brilliant colours or find themselves on exotic journeys or in beautiful landscapes of a visionary nature. Each person’s treatment is unique as are the experiences of that treatment. One thing is certain however; Reiki does bring a deep sense of peace and wellbeing to whoever comes into contact with it. Many people find that Reiki transforms their lives and go on to learn it for themselves so that they can continue with self treatments. You don’t need to have anything particularly wrong with you to benefit from Reiki.

All you need is a commitment to bringing peace and harmony into your life and Reiki can be there to make it happen.

Some people question whether it is necessary to believe in Reiki before anything will happen. Though Reiki is a form of spiritual healing it is not faith healing and it is entirely non-denominational. Anyone, regardless of race, creed or religious beliefs can experience the effects of Reiki. Although it is better to have a positive mental attitude towards the treatment Reiki will work if you are simply prepared to give it a go and find out for yourself. I have known many instances where Reiki has also had a powerful effect on those who are quite adamant that Reiki is no more than superstitious nonsense.

Belief is simply not a factor in Reiki.

A full Reiki treatment can last up to an hour and a half and will cost you anything between $30 and $60.
Depending on the problem to be treated a full course of treatments might mean several visits.
For more serious problems expect to need ongoing and extensive treatment.
Price is not an indication of quality in Reiki. Because Reiki training is so accessible, and there being very little in the way of professional guidelines for Reiki practitioners, there are a number of unscrupulous people charging high prices for less than satisfactory treatments. Always look for someone who’s level of integrity and truth you are personally satisfied with. Find out how long the practitioner trained for – there are some Reiki Masters currently practicing and teaching Reiki who took less than two weeks to do all of their training!

Some claim to have learnt the whole system in a day.

Ask whether the practitioner can give you their training lineage back to Mikao Usui.

Anyone involved with Reiki should be able to do this, as it is a point of honour embedded within the system.

Searching within, searching without

“Believe nothing,

No matter where you read it,

Or who has said it,

Not even if I have said it,

Unless it agrees with your own reason

And your own common sense.”

– Buddha

There are many paths to an answer (if that is indeed what is being sought), yet with all the information and sources out there, it can be very easy to get deluded with others’ ideas and concepts.

Occasionally when searching for an answer, the natural tendency is to “look” to someone or something else, be it a book, a song, a movie, something, anything with a message.

But with all the input we can become distracted to the point where, if we were to sit a few moments and listen to what our inner guide or guides may tell us, we would likely find the answer “within”.

All the communications with all the angels/guardians/spirit guides come from within.

After all, it is YOU doing the communication, and that has to come from WITHIN you.

Energy, gadgets, and investment in yourself…

As much as I can and do appreciate upsetting the apple-cart from time to time, the fact is that change isn’t always what we’re looking for.
Case in point…
A friend in the Reiki/metaphysical world that I wander around in sent me a note from another therapist who went on to say that the Reiki energy just wasn’t doing it for her anymore, the energy is old and apparently not relevant because of the shift in the human race that seems to be taking place.
Which leads me to this …if something works for you and you’re happy in it, fine. If it’s worn out it’s welcome for YOU, that doesn’t mean that it no longer works for everyone else who is happy with it.
Why, oh why must people foist their opinions on others who are apparently doing alright?
If someone isn’t feeling the buzz from raising and passing the Universal Life Force, well, that’s okay. Maybe their time is up doing that sort of work, or perhaps working within that framework has run its course.
Call it what you wish, (here’s that old chestnut yet again), the energy is what it is, undefinable but indeed, definitely there for those that wish to access it.
God, Krishna, Buddha, Ganesh, whatever…. IT’S ALL THE SAME.

(Funny, my mom asked me about meeting her parish priest to talk about doing a sermon on just this.
Now there’s an image, the Heyoka at the pulpit.
That’s something I don’t think anyone would ever expect, least of all me.)

The energy, as we’re all aware, is compassion, love, awareness, and a willingness and eagerness to share what many energy workers/healers/therapists have learned to (some degree) harness.

I’m learning, or have learned, that each new modality is a new way to pull in a buck. I’m really sorry to say that, but it is in fact the truth. It’s at the point where I’m having people with all manner of gadgets and healing wands and this, that and the next thing wanting me to endorse what they’re hawking, and frankly, I’d rather not.
The fact is, WE can and do heal ourselves and we DON’T need the little $300 and $400 gadgets that “speed up the healing process”.
We ARE the healing gadgets.
I’d rather take the time and teach the client how to
ENACT and ENABLE the energy so that they don’t NEED the little gadget.

All we need is the awareness and intention.

Just how easy IS changing the world?

A lot of the time when talking with people, either in real time or online, the first question that comes up is “How do I change the world and make it a better place?”.
My first initial response to this would be that as much as you may want to, the fact is that unless you’re in a position of power over the media and you can have the world’s ear at your beckoning, it’s not as easy as one might wish.
Then it generally leads to something like this…
The best one can really do is feel a sense of peace and joy and genuine love for the world and all that makes it up, including yourself, and yes, even the person you may have to “put up with” on a daily basis that just gets under your skin… feel that compassion for the world around you and let it exude from you. Let the people and the animals and your environment know that you’re feeling this way, let it show. Go ahead, smile, smile at someone you’ve never met just for the sake of making them smile back, or perhaps just to let them know that someone out there cares enough to smile at them. It takes very little and really does pay off a lot in the long run.
What I’m getting at is, if we put forth a sense and vibration of positive, benevolent energy, it can’t help but come back in kind, if not in multiples.

Hmmm. Just think of it, you wake up feeling simply wonderful, just knowing that you’re going to have your best day in a long time, and the rest of the people in your world are waking up feeling the same way.

Everyone’s having the best day they’ve had in a long time and the world just feels…. right.

Imagine the possibilites, imagine how good that day would feel.

Now go out and create that day.
It’s within our power to do so, and so we shall.

blessings all

Energy saturation, or Mother Earth’s full…

Posted in Healing thoughts with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 18, 2010 by Heyoka Healing Arts

A few years back, while studying for and achieving the Karuna Reiki® Teacher/Master level, I had the honour and pleasure to meet up with a shaman from the Micmac nation. We spent the evening sharing stories and experiences (strange how they all seemed similar, same school, different teacher I guess) and at one point he “read” a crystal I’ve been carrying for some time.

This crystal is of the type that’s known as a record-keeper and a transmitter of information.

While he was reading this piece of crystal, he was told to give me a message, which I’m to pass on to all and any light/engergy workers out there that care to listen.

Mother Earth is full, she can’t take anymore.

This would apply to the practice we all have of either shaking off the “bad” or excess energy we may take off a client, or to the concept of sitting on the ground on your backside and connecting that way to drain off your bad or overflowing vibes.

She can’t take it anymore, and would really appreciate it if we could send the energy upward for a while….

I suppose if one were to look at some of the natural disasters of late, you could see the similarity between Mother Earth and say, maybe a big dog that’s got a little too much pent up energy. Eventually there comes a shake and all the energy, or pests…. goes flying off.

So to speak. And in retrospect (looking at weather conditions and such over the last few years) I have to say she’s been reacting and no one’s really been listening.

Go hug a tree, raise your arms and hands to the skies. Let it go up. There’s loads of space up there.

Take from this what you will.

I’m only telling you what I was told.

Energy workers, Vampires (!?) and all that stuff.

An online conversation regarding the difference between a Reiki practitioner and those living with the “vampyric condition”. The questions were from a young woman in the midwest USA.

“I am doing an paper on how being vampiric is different from Reiki and I need some help, I am finding that the way Reiki is used is very similar but yet different. Can you all be so kind to help me out?”

*If you have some specific question(s), I’d be glad to be of help.
Fire away….

“First question is what is the difference between the ways we (the psi-vamp) use energy and a reiki practitioner?”

The vast majority of the vampyric encounters I took part in *see below* were of the cleansing kind, as in my counterpart would be in a situation of needing to remove or release some pent up energy or energies, and I would facilitate the removal of said energy.

As for others in the community, it’s my understanding that there are some who draw energy for the sole purpose of self-sustenance, and some for the purpose of (you asked, I’ll say it) malicious intent, such as causing discomfort either close up or from a distance, and always it would seem for selfish reasons.

A Reiki practitioner (if working according to Reiki precepts and concepts) doesn’t work for their own benefit. They work for the benefit of the client or recipient.  Also, the Reiki practitioner acts as nothing more than a channel or metaphysical siphon of sorts for the Universal Life Force.

I found in the past (pre-Reiki attunements) that when doing energy work, I would end up being exhausted and drained, mostly because although the energy I was exchanging was clean and wonderful and marvelous and all that, it was tapping me of other physical resources. It was my energy that was being sent here there and everywhere, leaving me sometimes a bit senseless and more than a bit dazed.

Being tuned in to Reiki allows me to open up to energies all around me on levels that, as much as I was aware of them previously, I guess I didn’t have the access I do since being attuned.

“Last question, on many reiki sites I see how to defend yourself against a psychic vampire why is that?? “

Are you sure you want me to open up that particular can of worms?

Okay… I will.

If you look at all of the “information” on vampires, they are described as being creatures/lifeforms/beings that inherently take what they need, with no apparent regard for the, shall I say “victim” or “donor”. (Keep in mind, this is not my opinion or attitude, just what I’ve gleaned over way too many years).
That being said, it is a seemingly common school of thought that interaction with a vampire is a generally negative, shall I say, soul-sucking interaction. Now, logically thinking, that’s not something that most people want to have happen to them, so, information on how to protect oneself from an energy/chi/ki/spirit sucker is going to be out there for all and any to see.

So, why are people cautious? Because they don’t have the knowledge to understand the “vampyric” condition, because they haven’t experienced that side of the coin.

Experience tends to bring knowledge, unfortunately, it’s not always possible to experience all the wonderful weirdness out there….

Energy worker? Vampyre? No, a Heyoka

Energy worker? Vampyre? No, Heyoka.

Oh yes, the see below part.

Prior to becoming a certified and registered Reiki teacher, like many out there,  I wandered through a collection of philosophies and, shall we say, lifestyles. One of them being the “vampire” community, a group of people who I learned very quickly WEREN’T living the Hollywood/fictional/role-playing version of “vampire”. People who were quite practiced in energy manipulation, both up close and from a distance, hence the term “psi-vamp”.  This is why the term was used in the interview.
